I just checked the data site and downloaded what should have been the last 90 days of crime reports. There’s nothing in the file with a “real” date (one that has already happened) past February 7. I’ve always gotten the crime stats data from this site: https://data.oaklandca.gov/Public-Safety/CrimeWatch-Maps-Past-90-Days/ym6k-rx7a
Today the site even says, “data last updated February 8, 2023.”
I don’t know what I’ll get from this, but on May 2 I filed an official Public Records Request with the city of Oakland, asking them for the crime listings for beat 12Y and 13X for the months of February, March, and April 2023. In my comments I made it clear that what I really want is the data feed restored to its original site. If you want to look at my request, here’s the link:
I originally assigned the request to the Information Technology department; looking at it just now, I see they’ve added the Police Department as the lead responder, although IT is still on there. I’ll report on what I learn. I feel that, after having provided the citizens of Oakland with a reliable list of what crimes were reported in their neighborhoods since January 2013, suddenly removing the information is an unacceptable breach of transparency. The “last updated” date suggests strongly that this was related to the ransom ware attack on February 8, although what the ransom ware gang wanted with this information escapes me. And if the city has moved this data feed somewhere else, I want to know.
